If you're anything like me, a tidy craft room is the key to your heart. So why not tidy up and organize with some old-fashioned flair?
So today I’m sharing a vintage-inspired system for keeping your thread organized from us thread lovers here at Thread and Paw. It's super fun and makes your crafting supplies something gorgeous to look at and easier to use when you're stitching away.

GRAB YOUR LIST OF SUPPLIES
Ready to organize?
Just grab the list of supplies below and head on over to your local craft shop.
You might already have one or two of these items hiding out in a drawer somewhere at home so don't forget to check before you buy!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Clothespins with springs
- Mini stamps with numbers
- Ink pad
- Any container with compartments long enough to store your clothespins.
LET'S GET STAMPING!
The next step is to stamp the DMC thread numbers onto the ends of your clothespins so once you throw away the little thread wrappers you'll have a record of what color thread you need to buy again or what colors to use during a project. I used a brown ink pad for stamping to give my pins a vintage look but feel free to use any color ink for your stamped numbers!
To find your DMC thread number just look at the end of your skein of floss. It's usually located right under the bar code. That's the number that's given specifically for this color. And that's the number you'll want to stamp. Just find the corresponding number stamps and stamp away!
TIP: You might want to do a "test run" on a piece of scrap paper before you start stamping on your clothespins.
That way you can practice the spacing of your numbers and your pressure for stamping. When all of your clothespins have been stamped simply wind the thread around the ends of your pins - so easy!
SORT YOUR THREADS
I like to sort my threaded clothespins by warm, cool and neutral colors. But feel free to create a system of your own. Other ideas would be to sort by...
- color of the rainbow
- by project
- alphabetically (go crazy!)
Just remember: you want a system that is quick and easy to use!!!

KEEP THE STITCH PAWTY GOING!
If having your thread all pretty and organized is giving you the itch to stitch you can find more paw-inspired cross stitch patterns from Thread and Paw.
We make easy cross stitch designs for crafters who love their pets (we get it, there is no such thing as a spoiled pet).
SHOW US YOUR STITCH!
I’d absolutely love to see how you organized your thread!
Share a photo and tag @ThreadandPaw so we can see your pretty threads!
