Hello, I'm Carolyn! I'm a textile artist based in Saint Petersburg, Florida, who specializes in appliqué and needlework. My work explores the bonds we share with our pets and my love of the outdoors by incorporating botanical motifs and utilizing reclaimed materials from nature found in my locally wooded areas. I completed my BFA at the Tyler School of Art and have taught for over twenty years in schools, museums, and DIY studios throughout Tampa Bay.

I work with threads and wool felt in bold, warm tones: layering cut-out shapes and stitching the outlines of my design by hand. In my work, I explore the special relationships I’ve shared with the pets in my life. Working from sketches I’ve drawn while out on early morning walks with my dogs, I create images that reflect my interest in their view of the world. I am inspired by folk art imagery such as the minimalist appliqué work of Harriet Powers and the symmetrical patterns found in traditional Polish paper-cut designs known as Wycinanki. Overall, my work is driven by a playful exploration of color, balance, and form.
